Ailton Krenak, índio da etnia krenak, é jornalista, produtor gráfico e líder indígena. Nasceu em Minas Gerais em 1954. Alfabetizou-se aos 18 anos, já com a família no Paraná. Na década de 1980, passou a se dedicar exclusivamente à articulação do movimento indígena. Em 1985, fundou a ONG Núcleo de Cultura Indígena (NCI). Em 1987, em meio às discussões da Assembleia Constituinte, foi autor de um gesto que comoveu a opinião pública: pintou o rosto de preto com pasta de jenipapo enquanto discursava no plenário do Congresso Nacional, em sinal de luto pelo retrocesso na tramitação dos direitos indígenas. Também participou da fundação da União das Nações Indígenas (UNI), do movimento Aliança dos Povos da Floresta e na criação da Reserva da Biosfera da Serra do Espinhaço. Hoje é um dos mais conhecidos líderes indígenas do Brasil, atuando também como assessor para assuntos indígenas do governo de Minas Gerais.

“A partir de uma coisa que nós temos chamada Núcleo de Cultura Indígena, que é uma iniciativa que nós começamos há 20 anos atrás – a de apropriar novas tecnologias, tipo internet, ponto de cultura, para algumas regiões na floresta – nós estamos concluindo agora uma ação legal que é a de formatar junto com pessoas de diferentes culturas, de diferentes lugares da Amazônia, pegando o Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Acre, Roraima, formatar com eles espaços que vão estar localizados dentro destas aldeias, onde as pessoas locais, na sua própria língua, na sua cultura local, vão poder interagir numa rede chamada Rede Povos da Floresta”.
“O secretário de Cultura do Estado de Minas Gerais me chamou em julho, agosto do ano passado: “Krenak, o governo vai iniciar uma série de ações agora de promoção da cultura e tem um segmento aí que a gente quer abordar, que são as comunidades indígenas, sei lá, fazer um seminário, chamar os antropólogos…”. Eu peguei e falei com ele assim: “Sei lá, este papo de seminário, chamar um antropólogo, chamar não sei o quê, isso me parece uma visão tão clínica, tipo assim: ‘Ah, estou com uma dor aqui, vou no médico para perguntar o que eu tenho’”.

Krenak é dessas pessoas pelas quais tenho profundo respeito e admiração. Tive contato com ele em duas oportunidades, tempos atras: uma em que ele er oalestrante – evento sobre 500 anos de descobrimento da América – e uma conversa pessoal, penso que em 2002, em conversa direta, quando da realização de um festival de cultura, na Bahiia. Faço votos para que ele viva muito e elabore mais ainda.

Seu comentário..vocês querem divulgar, suas cultura, minha filha esta fazendo um trabalho onde tem que escolher um tribo indigena e falar sobre ela, escolhemos os krenaks, e ai, tinha que falar sobre a escola, como é, como são as aulas, e nada encontramos, não é só falar do passado mas falar do atual também.
