Carlos Augusto Calil é cineasta e professor de cinema, rádio e televisão na ECA/USP há mais de 20 anos. Desde 2005, está à frente da pasta de Cultura da Prefeitura de São Paulo, cujos destaques da gestão são as obras de reforma do Teatro Municipal de São Paulo, que em 2011 completa 100 anos, e a criação do Sistema Municipal de Bibliotecas, que integrou todas as bibliotecas públicas municipais. Foi diretor de diversos filmes, entre eles “Simitério de Adão e Eva” (1975) e “A Metrópole e o Balé” (1998), entre outros trabalhos no cinema como montador, editor etc. Já foi vice-presidente da Comissão de Cinema da Secretaria de Estado da Cultura, diretor e presidente da Empresa Brasileira de Filmes S/A (Embrafilme), diretor da Cinemateca Brasileira e diretor do Centro Cultural São Paulo.

“Não precisava ser um torturador, sargento, para ser dirigente cultural da ditadura militar. Havia, como sempre há, brechas para você atuar, como hoje não significa que tudo tem que ser privatizado, tudo tem que ser mercantilizado. Por outro lado, negar o mercado é bobagem. O mercado existe antes da gente se constituir e continuará existindo depois da gente desaparecer, portanto é uma bobagem. O mercado é um dado da realidade. Artistas que dizem “Eu não produzo para o mercado” são ingênuos ou são narcisistas.”
“Diretor precisa ter que prestar contas. Mas há prestações de contas e prestações de contas. Eu não sei se pedir todas as notas fiscais de determinada filmagem é a melhor maneira de você prestar contas, ou receber as contas, porque você sabe muito bem que você pode forjar tudo aquilo. (…) Mas por que isso aconteceu? Porque nós temos uma lei única para o serviço público. Então, se toda a arte agora é feita com o dinheiro público, todas as operações culturais terão que ser feitas como se faz uma ponte, como se constrói uma creche… Então não dá! Tem que ter um regime diferente para a cultura e para a arte.”
