Paulo Henriques Britto é poeta, tradutor e professor de tradução, criação literária e literatura brasileira na PUC-Rio, que lhe concedeu em 2002 o título de Notório Saber. É formado em português e inglês na mesma universidade. Nascido em 12 de dezembro de 1951 no Rio, morou por dois períodos nos Estados Unidos – entre 1962 e 64 e entre 1972 e 73, quando teve acesso ao inglês, língua da qual e para a qual traduz. É tradutor de mais de cem livros, entre eles “O Som e a Fúria”, de William Faulkner, “Introdução, tradução e notas”, de Lord Byron, e “Uma Arte”, de Elizabeth Bishop, trabalho que ganhou indicação ao Prêmio Jabuti de obra traduzida.

“Quando eu comecei a atuar, ainda havia muita disparidade, havia tradutores bons e tudo, mas havia muitas traduções mal feitas. A editora não tinha a ideia de que uma má tradução podia matar um livro, que um livro mal traduzido é um livro que vai ser rejeitado pelo mercado. De lá para cá, eu acho que a nossa indústria editorial melhorou muito, ela cresceu e amadureceu. As editoras hoje em dia têm consciência de que o produto-livro bem traduzido é uma coisa que vai valer muito mais.”
“O papel da escola não é ensinar gramática. Acho que gramática a pessoa tem que estudar mais adiante. Eu acho que na escola, no ensino fundamental, no ensino básico – não sei como é que chama agora, primário, sei lá -, é botar a criança para ler e desenvolver hábito de leitura. As escolas deviam ter bibliotecas, as crianças deviam adquirir o hábito de pegar o livro emprestado, ler o livro, devolver o livro. Este culto à biblioteca é importantíssimo.”

Nossa…queria poder pedir conselhos a Paulo Britto, como – por onde começar?
Eu leio livros dos quais os originais são em italiano e inglês, e quando me deparo com os erros de tradução fico abismada…e penso…mas nem nas traduções o Brasil consegue definir um padrão de qualidade?
Bem, por curiosidade, eu passei a verificar quem são os tradutores, e os livros da autora Ayn Rand foram traduzidos por Paulo Britto.
Eu uso a leitura traduzida para o portugues junto com o livro na lingua original, como método de aprendizado…digo, aprimoramento.
Qualquer conselho sobre o aprendizado, aprimoramento do Inglês me interessa…aceito palpites de toda ordem. Italiano também, porem neste idioma me sinto mais preparada…digo, não sinto dificuldade na leitura e compreensão dos textos como sinto nos escritos em inglês.
